If only you could teleport to  a place like Australia!  If youre feeling  down under  huge  piles of work and grey skies, with no leave left to use, fear not! There is a way  you can go  Down Under without even leaving the office. Try swapping mundane recruiter speak and business buzzwords for some true blue Aussie slang. Banish phrases like  reaching out and  catching up, and touch base with your inner Aussie  instead.  To get started, read up on these  22 sayings from the faraway  land of spiders, ciders and horseback riders: 1. Howre you going? This is a favourite among Australians. Its  a creative take on the slightly boring, how are you?  and  should be responded to with good thanks, you? Morning Jeffrey! Morning, howre you going? 2. Shell be right This  can be used to provide reassurance to someone, or confirmation that everything will be okay.  It is also used to personify inanimate objects or scenarios. I just spent 15 minutes filling out an online application for my candidate and now my computers frozen. Shell be right. Just give her ten minutes. 3. Strewth! This is a word you can use when you are genuinely shocked or surprised. It is a good silence filler for when you are trying to process new, startling information. We are going to offer your candidate the role, but at a salary $10,000 less than what she asked for. Strewth! Australia now officially European. It is most commonly used the morning after a big night out or following a big, strenuous event. That networking event last night was crazy, I said Id go for one drink and then I didnt end up getting home until 4am. Howd you pull up this morning? 5. Im under the pump This means you are busy, or under serious pressure to perform. Fancy going out for lunch today after the conference call? Sorry mate I cant, Im under the pump. Ive got to find four candidates for my client by close of play today. 6. You beaut! This is an exclamation  to commend someone on their great work. It can also be used as mere commentary on a great situation as it unfolds in real time. I have just pre-closed a candidate on $5,000 less than what I know the offer is going to be. You beaut! 7. Bonzer Bonzer is another  word for excellent, great or brilliant. It packs more punch though, and is a little more playful. How was the meeting? It was bonzer. I pulled 3 live job leads. 8. Big bikkies Think dollars, cents, pounds and pence. Big bikkies means big money, or can be used to describe something being very expensive. When saying it, it makes you think of big, tasty biscuits, which is a bonus. That guy I placed four years ago has moved up the ranks so quickly he  just made director. Good on him. I bet hes earning big bikkies now. 9. Fair dinkum This can be used to emphasise the validity or trueness of someone or something. The new starter on Gregs team has sourced 5  placements in her first month! Yeah, shes  a fair dinkum rising star. Would you like a receipt for the coffees? Yes, Id like a docket thanks.  Ill be handing this over to the tax-man, thank you! 11. Give it a burl Think have  a crack or give it a go. It means to release your inhibitions, let go of your worries and just bowl in to something. Im scared to call that client in case he hangs up on me. Who cares? Go on, give it a burl. 12. Gone walkabout This is a phrase used to describe someone going missing, or falling off the radar for a significant amount of time. Have you  heard from  Jeffrey? He only had one candidate meeting in the diary, but hes been gone for four hours. Nah, hes probably gone walkabout mate. 13. Mates rates This refers to a discount, or when something is made cheaper or easier due to an existing relationship between buyer and seller. What are you charging for your candidates? I  usually operate at a margin of 20% for perm hires, but Ive known these guys for years so Ill give them 18% mates rates. 14. Piece of piss This is a turn of phrase which signifies something being super easy, or simple to master. This role is going to be so easy to fill. I literally have 10 perfect candidates already submitted. Yes, this will be a piece of piss for you, mate. 15. Rack off This is a great way to tell someone to get lost or go away. Its best  to scrunch up your nose as you say this, and make a shooing gesture with your hand, while shaking your head. Jeffrey, can you please tell me how convert this PDF CV into a  word document  please? Rack off! Im busy. Ridgey-didge This is a fun way to say something is original. I love the way she has worded her CV, its so captivating. My client is going to love this. I know that candidate. Shes very ridgey-didge in everything she does. 17. Rooted Rooted is a way to describe a situation where you have absolutely no hope at succeeding. It is interchangeable with doomed. My candidate is currently second preference, behind a guy who literally ticks every box on the job description and is £5,000 cheaper. Youre rooted. 18. Stoked You would use this word to describe a feeling of true happiness, sprinkled with surprise. Congratulations Jeffrey, you have hit your sales quota which means you are invited to attend the high achievers company trip! Thank you. I am absolutely stoked, I didnt think this was going to happen! 19. Hit the turps This is used to describe the action involved with enjoying an alcoholic beverage, or two. Jeffrey are you coming for a drink after work today? Yes definitely, Im pretty keen to hit the turps. 20. Flamin galah Flamin galah is used as a friendly insult. You can call someone this when they have done something silly, or careless. The phrase was made popular by  Home and Away  television character Alf Stewart. I accidentally shredded my notes from the meeting, so now I cant remember what Im supposed to do. Well youre a flamin galah, arent you? Someone somewhere probably has an Alf Stewart tattoo. And it probably says flamin galah. wow.someone.actually (@Chaos_Merchant) April 20, 2016 21. Crikey! This is simply a fun way to exclaim; the verbal Aussie interpretation of !. It can be used in response to a good or bad  stimulus, but the key here is in the delivery. The late croc-hunter, Steve Irwin, used to say this when a crocodile would snap at him unexpectedly. Stop! Dont send that joke email, youve got the whole office CCd by  mistake! Crikey! That was close! Watching old videos of Steve Irwin, The Croc Hunter himself! Budgy smugglers This is not necessarily a term you would hear regularly in offices located in colder  climates. However, as the weather starts to warm up,  you might catch someone saying this, in relation to swimming or just going to the beach.  Budgy smugglers refer to swimming pants for men.    It is a term inspired by imagining how it might look if someone were to  smuggle a budgy through an airport while only wearing pants. There’s hot cocoa, warm fires, and a little extra free time to relax. One of the last things on your mind is your personal brand. But the winter is not an excuse to let your guard down when it comes to your brand. You should see it as an opportunity. There a lot of networking opportunities you can use to your advantage this time of year. You can make the most out of the holiday season and enhance your personal brand, and here’s how: When 80 percent of todays jobs are landed through networking, you know you need to step up your game, and holiday parties are the perfect place for you to do it. Between work, family, and friends, you are going to spend your evenings in the next month with a lot of different groups of people, all whom are valuable people to have in your network. Family Parties. When you’re sitting at your next family party and there’s a lull, start to ask people about their lives. People love to talk about themselves, so they’ll gladly volunteer information and when they talk about work, ask them to elaborate. Then, when they ask you about your life, tell them the great things you’re accomplishing and express interest in new experiences. Even if your family and friends can’t land you a job themselves, they might know somebody who can, and they’ll be happy to help. Work Celebrations. Then you’ve got work parties as well. The Great Job Search Three Key Tips to Get an Advantage December 2012. A technical writing major graduated from the University of Idaho. As she walked to receive her diploma, she felt two overlapping emotions: relief and panic. Relief that tests and grades were a thing of the past; panic that she now had the overwhelming task of finding a job with a liberal arts degree. That technical writer was me. Don’t worry. This story has a happy ending. After I bumbled my way through my second interview, I successfully landed a marketing job at a local start-up. For anyone in a similar boat, here are three things I wish I had known then. It would have helped. A lot.   No Rest! After my initial graduation, I turned in a few job applications. Then I spent my days hanging out with my brother who was going overseas for the next two years, feeding my animals on Farmville, watching television, and reading voraciously. I occasionally sent in a job applications. Four months later after my brother left, I dove into my job search. The problem is not that I took time off. The issue is that I spent four months playing dead-end Facebook games! If I was thinking, I would have spent a small slither of that time on perfecting my writing craft, writing articles that would be seen by real people, or acquiring other skills that hiring agents may want. No matter your career path, two or more hours a day working towards your professional career can decrease the time it takes to land that first job. Social Networking Until recently, I’d never been active on social media. I only used Facebook to cultivate my imaginary farm or dabble in other games. I also created a Twitter account that I never used. Here’s what I wish I had known during the job search: due to the fact that 87% of businesses have begun to utilize social networks one in six job seekers find jobs through social media platforms. Unsurprisingly, I did not get hired. After all, how can a job interviewer invest in your abilities if even you have doubts? And that’s what you are to the company, an investment. And due to the fact that it takes 5-months for companies to recover from the cost of hiring an employee, most companies try not to give people the benefit of the doubt. If you doubt, you’re out. Remember: You are a skilled professional who has been juggling tasks for years. If you lack confidence still, if you are asked any of the following questions, the answer is always yes. Can you handle this type of multi-tasking? Can you complete tasks quickly and efficiently? Are you a fast learner? Can you handle working in a group on projects? Does this mean you should lie about a skill you just don’t have? My rule of thumb is this: if you have time to learn a skill before the first day, feel free to say you have that skill. If you don’t have the time, admit your ignorance and assure the interviewer you’re a fast learner. Locating a job can be an intimidating task, especially when you’re fresh out of college. 3 ways to help women move up the career ladder Women leaders often fight an uphill battle in male-dominated industries. While gender equality has been a strong focus in the workplace, there are still barriers for females. Marcie Mueller, a board certified coach and leadership development practice leader at IMPACT Group, is passionate about breaking down these barriers and equipping women to accelerate their careers â€" no matter their industry. A Catalyst report of SP 500 companies shows that women comprise 45 percent of the total workforce, yet less than 25 percent of women are in board or C-suite roles,” says Mueller. “Some women aren’t finding leadership opportunities in their field, and many aren’t stepping up to ask for those roles.” Mueller’s 20 years of experience implementing talent and leadership development programs has solidified her belief that offering training isn’t enough â€" companies must commit to developing their talent. “You see the best results when participants are actively involved in setting their professional development goals,” she said. “There are specific things organizations can do to engage women in this process and provide the right opportunities for them to develop in their careers.” Here are three ways Mueller empowers women to rise up the corporate ladder. 1. Implement Ways for Women to Gain Corporate Exposure Harvey Coleman, author of Empowering Yourself: The Organizational Game Revealed, conducted a great deal of research to determine what drives career success. He believes that exposure makes up 60 percent of an individual’s success. This implies that who knows you and trusts you determines if you are selected for new opportunities and advancement in your company. “Corporate visibility â€" having a brand and building a broad network at the office â€" is vital for leaders. This is also a potential challenge for women,” said Mueller. “Women tend to focus solely on high performance and overlook the importance of a network.” Focus development opportunities on ways women can gain visibility and exposure within their departments and the organization as a whole. Participants in the Women in Leadership program Mueller developed at IMPACT Group complete a one-on-one with an executive at a Senior Vice President level or higher at their company. “When the women speak with leaders one-on-one, they find it is much easier to talk about their work, their strengths, and their ideas rather than in situations where they are outnumbered,” Mueller said. “The executives have also gained a lot from it. Most of them are unaware of the great talent they have at their company because they simply don’t have opportunities to interact with them.” Women need to know that building a strong brand and cultivating an internal network is not bragging â€" it helps others realize the value they bring to their company each and every day. The more exposure women gain to leaders and decision makers in the office, the more potential they have to be selected for new opportunities in the future. 2. Encourage women to speak up “Women in organizations where their gender is underrepresented often find themselves the only female in meetings,” says Mueller. “Being heard and having their ideas accepted can be a challenge for them in this kind of setting.” Training programs should focus on building the confidence and assertiveness of women so they feel comfortable sharing ideas in meetings, brainstorming sessions, and team discussions. Discuss communication styles so women are aware of their approach and tone. This is also a great way for women to realize when they use disclaimers during conversations, especially the word “but.” “You hear women start sentences with things like, ‘I may not be the expert on this, but…’, or ‘Keith may know more about this than I do, but…’ We use disclaimers because we want to be liked, we don’t want to talk over someone, or we’re not comfortable taking all the credit,” said Mueller. 3. Use projects to build leadership capabilities Rising female leaders find projects are key. “Our Women in Leadership program typically includes a capstone activity so the participants not only deliver immediate value to their company, but also put the skills they’ve learned into practice,” Mueller said. Even small-scale projects make a difference as they do more than just build skills â€" they also promote visibility. Women should actively seek out cross-functional committees, projects, and stretch assignments to enhance their project and people management skills. “I tell my clients not to wait for a promotion into leadership,” Mueller said. “Be a leader and find leadership opportunities on an ongoing basis.” Research illustrates that having women in leadership roles leads to better overall business performance, proving that an organization’s investment in their talent is well worth it. Networking Tips Sometimes you’ve got to out there and pound the pavement right?! I am a regular contributor to the National Contract Managers Association’s student newsletter “Students Connect.” Here’s one of my recent short articles on Networking Skills below…and here’s the direct link to the article. A Few Networking Tips for Beginners Networking is still a great way to find a job. Resumes from referrals tend to land on the top of the applications pile and are typically reviewed first. Here are some quick tips for networking in a group or one on one: Get clear: Get clear on what you’re looking for. What kind of job or opportunity do you want? Keep it short and sweet so you can communicate it easily. Tell everyone you’re looking: This includes friends, family, fellow studentsâ€"even professors. You never know who might know someone in the field you’re interested in. Don’t be shy: Ask for the referral. People are usually happy to help and the worst they can say is no. Remember… nothing ventured, nothing gained. Follow-up: Follow-up with the referral offered and the person who provided it. Send a hand-written thank you note to the person who helped you.
